John R. Wood - 1947

John, and his wife, Wanda, moved to Naples, Florida in 1957. John passed the Florida bar and maintained his license for over 20 years, but real estate was his passion. Within a year, they opened John R. Wood Realtors. Over the next 50 years, John was a driving force in the transformation of Naples from a sleepy fishing village to a thriving resort destination.

In the early days, John concentrated on land sales and developed a reputation for integrity with his slogan, “Walk on it before you buy,” to offset the perception that all Florida lot sales involved swamp land. The firm gradually began selling more homes, lots, and acreage, and by the late '50’s, Naples’ condominium life was growing.

John served as President of the Naples Area Board of Realtors in 1963 and 1964. He was President of the Florida Association of Realtors in 1971 and Chairman of the Florida Real Estate Commission in 1977. He served as president of the National Association of Realtors in 1981, a role that took the Woods around the world representing the association.

The 1990’s brought the company expansion, and sales rose. Its reputation for legendary service was verified by surveys that showed 99% customer satisfaction. Wood led the way in community work, and the company became a philanthropic supporter of over 100 organizations throughout southwest Florida.
