Academic Approach and Single-Gender Learning

We focus on building relationships between faculty and students, creating an environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and a love of lifelong learning. Using principles in single-gender teaching from The Gurian Institute, teachers incorporate hands-on teaching, problem-solving, and collaborative exercises that reach across the curriculum.

The Distinct Middle School Structure

At Riverside, our middle school is a distinct learning and boarding experience – separate from the high school – and students may choose to board or commute as day students. The middle school uniform distinguishes students from upper school cadets, and a separate schedule for classes, meals, athletics, and co-curricular activities ensures that middle school students’ social, physical, mental, and academic needs are met.

Building Foundation for High School and Beyond

The curriculum is designed to prepare middle school students for the rigor of Riverside's college prep program. JROTC is taught at the 8th through 12th grade level. Qualified middle school students may also choose or be invited to take advanced courses. Outside the classroom, our middle school cadets have dozens of opportunities to try new things and develop interests and passions – all while building bonds with their fellow cadets. Exceptions to the ROTC requirement need approval of the Academic Dean. Learn more about clubs and activities at Riverside Prep.

For my career, I'm trying to do aerospace engineering. I feel like I have a hard time sometimes, but… all the classes are going to help me a lot.

What Families Want to Know.

List of 4 frequently asked questions.

  • How are military principles introduced to middle school students?

Military principles are introduced to our middle school students through a structured daily routine that emphasizes discipline, respect, and responsibility. While formal JROTC training starts in high school, middle school students engage in activities and lessons that lay the foundation for military-style leadership – including teamwork exercises, respect for authority through ceremonial practices, and an introduction to the values that guide military conduct. These principles are seamlessly integrated into both academic and extracurricular activities, fostering an environment of personal growth and mutual respect from an early age.
  • Can middle school students participate in any JROTC activities?

While Riverside’s formal JROTC program begins in high school, middle school students, starting in the 8th grade, are introduced to some aspects of JROTC through special events and activities. This includes attending JROTC ceremonies and participating in select JROTC-led community service projects. These experiences provide middle school students with a glimpse into the JROTC program, preparing them for participation in high school and sparking an early interest in leadership and military disciplines.
  • How does Riverside support the transition from middle to high school?

Riverside Prep is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for students moving from middle to high school. Our transition program includes orientation sessions that familiarize students with the high school curriculum, JROTC program, and higher-level leadership opportunities. Additionally, middle school students are mentored by high school students, providing them with peer insights into academic success and involvement in high school. Academic advisors also play a key role in helping students select courses that align with their interests and goals, ensuring a personalized and supportive transition.
  • What leadership opportunities are available to middle school students?

Leadership development is a key component of our middle school program. Students have the opportunity to take on leadership roles within their classes, clubs, and sports teams. This includes serving as team captains, club officers, and leading peer study groups. Additionally, we offer leadership workshops and seminars specifically designed for middle school students, focusing on developing effective communication skills, problem-solving, and decision-making. Weekly character development convocations allow students to practice leadership in real-world scenarios, building confidence and capability.
