Track & Field Places Second at the GIAA Region 4-AAA Championships

Grit and determination: that’s what Riverside's track and field team exhibited at April’s GIAA Region 4-AAA championship. Although temperatures were high and the competition was fierce, the athletes rose to the occasion, winning several events and qualifying for the state meet. Despite sickness and exhaustion, the team rallied and cheered each other on, at times literally helping a struggling teammate put his shoes on for another race.

 

As Riverside mom Nicole Baker reflected, “I encourage all parents to come out and see the team’s brotherhood in action.”

 

Adrian Roberts and Jalen Freeman had an exceptionally good day. Roberts qualified in all five of his events: 3200m, 1600m, 800m, 4x800m relay, and the 4x400m relay. Freeman, the high point winner of the team, won gold medals in the 200m, 400m, and 4x400m relay, and took silver in the 100m.

 

Caleb Baker had a big day qualifying in the 300m hurdles, 4x800m relay, and 4x400m relay. Anthony Chirombo won gold in the high jump and qualified in the triple, long jump, and 4x400m relay. Thrower, ZiChen Zhang, won second place in both the discus and shot put events. Adrian Malvaez and Dominic Prochelo both qualified in the 4x800m relay.  

 

As a team, Riverside finished second place as the region runner-up, missing the title by only a few points. 

 

Coach Seth Brownlee proudly said of the team and head coach Wayne Jones, saying, "Not only did the team compete at a high level, but they did it with class and character; that's what makes me proud to be an Eagle."

 

The team’s discipline and endurance will set them on the path to success as they compete at State on April 27 - 29.
