Born in Illinois and raised in Alabama, LTC Adam Carter developed an early appreciation for discipline, service, and personal responsibility. At age 18, he enlisted in the United States Army as a Military Police Soldier, beginning a military career that spanned Active Duty, the Army Reserve, and the National Guard from 1983 to 1997. After completing his service, he earned his degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
His professional path led him to Private Law Enforcement, where for three years he supported Fortune 500 companies through government contracts. In 1996, Carter joined Riverside Military Academy, a place that quickly became both a calling and a home. For more than 30 years, he has served in the Commandant’s Office, and he is now beginning his seventh year—non-consecutive—as Commandant of Cadets.
Carter is a firm believer in the Military Model of Education. Over the decades, he has witnessed young men grow into leaders of character through structure, accountability, and mentorship. The work can be demanding, the hours are long, and it often requires time away from their own families. But he says the transformation they see in these cadets makes every sacrifice worthwhile. To be effective in this role, he believes he must have a genuine heart for youth development, and he considers it a privilege to help guide each young man entrusted to their Corps.
Carter has been married to his wife, Dr. Lynn Carter, a chiropractor, for 32 years. He says her support and understanding have been essential throughout his career of service.
